Strategy Tester and quote history on a Forex VDS
Dear traders!
Due to the growing number of "I can't connect to the server" requests, and to keep your terminals running stably and without interruptions, please note the following:
When you run the Strategy Tester (or download quote history manually), MetaTrader downloads a large amount of quote history over a long period, and as a result the terminal starts using hundreds of megabytes of RAM (> 800-900MB!), which makes your server unstable due to lack of RAM. The same happens if you manually download a large amount of quote history. In particular, you may have problems connecting via Remote Desktop, unstable operation, freezes, etc.
Moreover, the problem is NOT solved even by restarting MT, because it loads the entire downloaded quote history into memory again.
To restore normal operation of the terminal, you need to delete the downloaded quote history. To do this, open the MT "data folder" (not to be confused with the folder where MT is installed), close the running MT terminal, go to the History folder in the MT "data folder", find the folder inside it where the history is stored (it may be default, Alpari-Demo or another, depending on your broker / account / trade server name) and delete it. If you have had several accounts, there may be more than one history folder. Then delete the Tester folder with all its subfolders from the "data folder", and restart the MT terminal.
If you have difficulty clearing the quote history, contact your broker's support with the question "How do I delete the downloaded quote history so that the MT terminal uses less RAM?" for more information and instructions.
To access the server while it is unavailable via Remote Desktop, you can use the VNC console. In extreme cases (when you have overloaded the server so much that you cannot log in even via VNC), a forced reboot may be required.
As you understand, after clearing the quote history and restoring normal server operation, you should refrain from using the tester and downloading quote history, otherwise the problem will recur. We will not consider claims related to the consequences of a user's careless actions (server overload, unstable operation caused by lack of resources, etc.).
