Audio may be unavailable when connecting from Windows 10/11 computers to VPS instances running Windows Server 2008 R2 or Windows Server 2012 using the standard Windows RDP client. On Windows 11 computers, this issue may be related to the August security update KB5121003 installed on the client computer.
If audio is required for your work, we recommend the free Thincast Client as a temporary workaround. Under Local Resources → Remote Audio, select audio playback on the local computer. Our tests confirmed that this method restored audio on affected servers.
Uninstalling update KB5121003 may also serve as a temporary measure. However, we do not recommend this approach, as it removes the security fixes included in the update. Such a rollback should only be performed by a qualified specialist after assessing the risks.
If Microsoft confirms the issue, a fix is expected in future updates to the Windows RDP client.
Please note that running outdated operating systems without current security updates increases the risk of unauthorized access, malware infection, and data breaches. We recommend planning a migration to Microsoft-supported versions of Windows Server that receive regular security updates.
